Wine & Dine Trips

Come join us aboard Mikumba for a new, unique experience through the beautiful islands off nearby Padang. Our fishing and “Wine & Dine” trips offer a private getaway to a special and virtually untouched section of Sumatra. These trips can be catered to your needs, but the primary focus will be fishing, snorkeling, exploring untouched beaches, and simply enjoying a delicious meal and a fine bottle of wine on a beautiful ship in the presence of a breathtaking backdrop.

Your trip would begin a beautiful cliff top drive past the local monkeys to the exotic bay of Bungus, approximately a 30-minute drive south of Padang. Here you will meet the crew, be motored out to the awaiting Mikumba and pull anchor to begin your adventure. That first night you’ll likely be sitting on the rooftop deck watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean while the jungles come alive. Most mornings you’ll hear the howler monkeys and see the mist slowly rise out of the Sumatran jungle before we take you to explore an unspoiled beach and take you fishing through some of the beautiful straights.

Though this area of the globe isn’t known for its world-class fishing, the catches in this particular area are typically very good, and far exceed other nearby regions such as Singapore, Malaysia or Jakarta. Past groups have been particularly successful with popping, especially for trevally, where some true whoppers have been caught on a regular basis. Occasionally we have success while trolling as well, and fish such as spanish mackerel, a wide variety of tuna, mahi mahi, and even the odd giant sailfish have been landed.

The snorkeling in this area is outstanding. The water is crystal clear, and there are miles and miles of pristine, untouched reef for you to explore. The fish are abundant, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take down the spear gun and try to land that night’s dinner, up close and personal. You can snorkel or swim up to shore, and take a walk on one of the many virgin beaches that grace this beautiful little stretch of Sumatra.

And speaking of dinner, there is nothing quite like enjoying a meal aboard a beautiful locally designed boat at one of our stunning anchorages. Though Mikumba is equipped with all the necessary amenities and modern creature comforts, it was designed in the traditional style Pinissi style of the local Sulawesian culture (read more about Mikumba here). In this area, you’ll see amazing landscapes and real natural beauty, even more so than anywhere in Thailand or Bali or any of Sumatra’s outer islands. Scuzz says these are THE nicest waterways he’s ever seen here, and you can find a safe calm anchorage in the biggest storm. The food is varied and healthy, and can be customized to fit your dietary needs and desires. We’ll have a variety of wine, beer, and spirits to accompany your meal, and again, the type and quantity of beverages can be customized upon request.

We hope you’ll come and join us on this unique adventure. It’s really up to you as to what you put in to, and get out of it, but we’ll provide all the necessary tools to have a lasting and memorable voyage. We will soon have prices and pictures for these special trips, but in the meantime feel free to contact us with any questions you might have. Thanks, and seize the day!
