APRIL
19th PHOTO UPDATE
As
Scuzz tries to sort through his 200+ emails before he can get Slayer
a more detailed update, we thought it'd be a good idea to give you a
look at some photos in the meantime.
One
thing that should be pointed out is that Scuzz heard repeatedly that
there WAS a tsunami wave in that hit Lagundri Bay in southern Nias.
There were reports of a tiny wave in nearby Teluk Dalam and also Sirombu,
but nothing like Lagundri. Scuzz speculates that it was the funneling
affect of the Lagundri Bay that brought in the wave. The locals know
the bay has a history of it – Lagundri actually used to be the
main southern port of Nias before the 1833 tsunami took it out and it
was moved to Teluk Dalam. Scuzz also feels this is why that warrior
village on the hill looks over Lagundri and not Teluk Dalam –
they wanted to see who was coming in.
Whatever
the cause, the villagers reported that it was pretty much just ONE wave
this time, but that is was much bigger and more powerful than last time.
Compound this with the actually quake damage, and it's simply a catastrophic
situation.
More
info to come soon, but hopefully these pictures help paint a more vivid
picture in the meantime.

This is
from Teluk Dalam. Scuzz says the buildings still standing are cracked
badly or on angles, and people won't sleep in them as there are many
aftershocks. Many will need to be knocked down.

More
Teluk Dalam. Scuzz said it was an eerie ghost like town, with military
and police the most visible presence. The majority of the people had
moved to refugee camps on the top off the hill.

Yet
more Teluk Dalam. It's ironic that in one of the poorest parts of the
worlds you find a nice new TV undamaged and satellite TV dishes littering
the rubble.

This
is the previously mentioned refugee camp on top of the hill at Teluk
Dalam. Scuzz said there were some smiles when we visited, but it was
the mood was very sad and scared.

A
young lady stands where her house used to be. The wave washed it up
into the hill in the background, smashing it completely. This is way
inside Lagundri bay, inland from the tower, which again is amazingly
still standing.

This
is Uni, the original ding fixer, with the sign, "me fix big hole
good". He just finished this new building. It was really solid,
with 4 or 5 big rooms, all with showers and toilets, plus a big stash
of his boards. It's just totaled. Despite this, he still helped Scuzz's
gang distribute all the rice, noodles, tarps, veggies and fruit.

This is
where Sibayak Losmen and Restaurant used to be. This is a bit deeper
in Lagundri bay near a little breakwall where we bring the dingy in
when we visit the town. It's also where a lot of the long-termers used
to stay, as it's a little quieter than in front of the wave. The
big house is completely gone, and the losmens were just obliterated
by the wave and quake.

This shot
shows where Southern Cross and the boys from the April 2nd trip anchored
in Lagundri. At the time this photo was taken, the boys are unloading
supplies on to the tinny to drop in on the beach, which is now way out.
This photo is taken above mid tide, which, for those of you who've been
to Lagundri Bay, will show you just how how much the reef has lifted.
