SARANYA
In 2006 we began working with Matt Cruden, owner of the famous Sumatran charter boat Mangalui Ndulu, to bring you trips to the Mentawais and Northern Sumatra on his newest venture, the MV SARANYA. It's safe to say that along with Scuzz, Matt is definitely one of the top two or three most respected and well-traveled guides/owners in Sumatra. Since roughly late 2007, Matt's partners Russell and Woody have taken over the the day to day operations of Saranya, and they're continuing the same level of excellent service and consistently delivering the highest quality boat trips possible. They are constantly upkeeping and upgrading Saranya, and have entensive knowledge of the various lineups throughout Sumatra, which ensures you you'll cruise in comfort and focus on the one thing that matters: surfing perfect waves. Saranya is a seventeen-meter, offshore custom-built steel-hulled and twin-engine surfing and pleasure vessel. She needs a minimum of six guests to leave port, but there’s bunks and ample space for up to eight passengers to cruise in air-conditioned comfort. Built in 1994 and with a complete refit in 2007/2008, she is fitted with all navigation and safety equipment and with all the aids and necessities for your every comfort. A full complement of equipment is listed in the inventory with the vessel description. Saranya was custom built specifically for long distance cruising and with her incredible range of 1,000 nautical miles, allows her to explore Indonesia and the incredible surfing locations in Western and Northern Sumatra. What this means to the guests is you have the option of traveling either to the Mentawais or to islands of the Telos, Hinakos, Nias, the Banyaks and beyond. And often the guests can make a “game time decision” on which area to travel to based on crowds, swell, or wind patterns. In 2006, the Saranya crew made some additional engine upgrades and some minor prop adjustments that will enable her to cruise at a quick 12 knots, and make her capable of reaching 15 – 16 knots under optimal conditions. So, what this means to the guests is a very fast commute to either stretch of islands. For the past couple seasons, Saranya has been fortunate enough to have Rick Hallet as their primary skipper. Rick is a Master Class V captain with plenty of experience in Southeast Asian waters. After several years doing extensive sailing around areas such as Bali, Thailand, Malaysia, Kenya, Chagos and the Seychelles, Rick originally started working in the charter industry on our vessels Asia and Southern Cross. After a few seasons guiding for us, Rick then did a stint on the Indo Jiwa with the Rip Curl Search around Papua and eastern Indo. After two more seasons guiding the Santa Lucia out to the Mentawais, Rick has now joined the Saranya team. Guests continually rave about how Rick is able to score the best possible waves with the least possible crowds, while at the same time making everyone feeling comfortable and at home while aboard the ship. He is definitely a great asset to the Saranya team. In addition to relying on the many years of experience of their skipper and crew, Saranya is is constant communication with boats of various fleets via HF radio and telephone regarding swell reports and current weather conditions and where the crowds are. This ensures passengers on both boats have the very best chance of scoring great, uncrowded waves. The recent addition of a satellite modem on board allows them to check the latest swell conditions online as well.
