Arrrrr Matey! Come join us aboard our newest vessel pioneering the deepest regions of Western and Northern Sumatra on MIKUMBA, the latest addition to the Sumatran Surfariis fleet. The Mikumba is designed in the same fashion of Indonesia's traditional boat, the Sulawesian built Pinissi. It's a BIG boat built in the style of the traditional pirate ships, and is from the origin of the Bugis people. This is where the term "Bogey Man" came from. The Indo pirates who would sail these around the Spice Islands, ravaging and pillaging. AAAARRRRRRR!!!! But as cool as the legend is, the modern day version of the boat is even cooler. At over 80 feet long and 20 feet wide, Mikumba was built in Indonesia's most famous ship building area of Sulawesi out of the finest local teak wood and was designed exclusively for surf travel, while still maintaining that traditional “pirate ship” look and feel. The giant mast is impossible to miss upon first inspection, and our crew is plenty capable of hoisting up the sails so she can fly with the wind. In fact, during the windiest times last season, we hit up to 8 knots just on sail power alone. However, you're more likely to cruise under the power of Mikumba's new 285hp engine at a stiff 9 - 11 knots. The thatched roofs and woodsy interior pay homage to an older era of boat building, but Mike (the primary owner) spared no expense in equipping Mikumba with the most modern amenities. The interior and overall design is both fashionable and functional, and Mikumba has all the tools necessary for a great surf adventure. In the off season of 2007, we had our local architect Tomo come in and give the sleeping quarters a complete overhaul. There is now one larger room with 6 bunks, as well as 2 separate double cabins. Being such a large boat, Mikumba holds 10 comfortably, but this variety in accommodations allows for some interesting variations in sleeping arrangements. The separate double cabins allow for a little added privacy for couples who’d like to sleep together, or groups where the guys and girls would like a different sleeping area. But the bunks are all close enough that 10 mates can still throw things at each other from across the hall. In addition, each room has it's own individual air conditioning unit, so the guys who like it freezing can sleep with a "like temperatured" roommate, and the guys who like to sweat it out can also find a roomy who suits their temperature needs better. ;) The rooms all have new woods, bedding and linens, which are made for you every morning by our hard working crew. There’s an additional single and double cabin upstairs, as well as tons of nooks and crannies throughout. Mikumba has 2 full bathrooms, as well as an additional indoor shower, which really keeps the crew spread out during the post surf evening rush before dinner. There are two large dining areas, as well as a separate lower salon, where you can watch the day's footage in air conditioned comfort, or pop in a DVD to watch on the large flat screen TV. We also frequently have dinner on the front deck space, and occasionally on the picnic table on the top deck. The top deck has to be one of the largest of it’s kind; if you ask your guide he'll probably let you take down the security ropes for a few running cannon balls, and it’s ideal for scooping out waves or for a group Jack-n-Coke at Sunset. Mikumba also has an additional raised hangout area just in front of the captain’s deck, and at the end of the 2008 season we removed second mast extended out the hard deck to within a few yards of the bow. This provides permanent shade for your boards, and created HEAPS more hang-out space on the front deck area. This top deck is ideal for throwing things down at unsuspecting surfers getting ready for a paddle, or getting your bronze on in the full-length lounge chairs. There's one last shaded on the second level out the back where you can relax and encourage the fish to jump on the line while we're trawling from spot to spot. Like all of our boats, Mikumba has 2 tenders: a steel 85hp beast with a center console, and a smaller 18-foot dingy with a 40hp engine. Our crew is always on the ready to zip you out to the lineups quickly, or just whisk you out a juice or Powerbar so you can keep surfing. Having two tenders is ideal for spreading the crowd out at locations where there is more than one surf spot. In addition, it’s great to have one dinghy available for exploration, to have a look what’s around the corner, while other people are still surfing. It’s also good to have one dinghy available to go fishing while your mates are still in the lineup. BOAT SPECS -80'
